Mavis Thomson was born in Omagh, Co.Tyrone
and has lived most of her life in Enniskillen. Mainly
self-taught - paints mostly in watercolour but also
makes sculptural constructions out of driftwood. Over
the past decade she has been making sculptural constructions/
assemblages out of driftwood yielded from the sea -
occasionally accompanied by verse - or particularly
painted in oil.
Elected:
Ulster Watercolour Society, the Watercolour Society
of Ireland, the Ulster Society of Women Artists, founder
member of the Turner Society, London. Has twice undertaken
residencies at Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig.
Winner of 'IONTAS' Sculpture Award 1998 and 1999. Elizabeth
Morrow Award Ulster Society Women Artists 2003.
Represented
numerous collections - amongst others:
Fermanagh County Museum, Tyrone Guthrie Centre, The
Derek Hill Collection, Donegal, University of Limerick,
RUA Diploma Collection and Masumi Foundation, Tokyo,
Japan.
