Rowel
Friers
Born 1920; died 1998
Rowel Friers was apprenticed to the Belfast Lithographic
firm of S.C. Smith & Co and while there attented
classes at the Belfast College of Art between 1935
and 1942. he showed paintings, illustrations and caricatures
at the CEMA Gallery in Belfast in 1953. For many years
Friers drew cartoons for the Belfast Telegraph, and
also contributed cartoons to the Irish Times and Punch.
He was awarded the MBE in 1977.
