RITA DUFFY President Royal Ulster Academy of Arts

Rita Duffy was elected President of the Royal Ulster Academy in September 2007. One of the youngest ever RUA Presidents, she received her BA at the Art and Design Centre and then her MA at the University of Ulster. After finishing Art College Rita began working as a sign writer, then a set painter for the Lyric Theatre, Belfast. She became more confident in her talent and drawing ability and worked on book covers and illustrations as well as continually working on her own art.

Context, authenticity and draftsmanship are fundamental to Duffy's work. Her work is a response to both personal and shared experiences, which have arisen from the socio-political situation in Northern Ireland. Much of her work is autobiographical, addressing her experience growing up Catholic and Female in the North of Ireland.

In recent years she has developed major artworks such as Drawing the Blinds 2001 where she worked with residents to transform Divis Tower into a creative Beacon. In 2002 the Blood Drawings were commissioned for O'Connell Street, a series of huge head-portraits of her relatives living on the island.

Rita Duffy has had numerous solo exhibitions in Ireland, UK, the USA, and Europe and is included in public, private and corporate collections
worldwide.
