Hunter
Born Belfast 1893; died 1951
He and his sister Mercy Hunter were the children of
an Irish Presbyterian missionary working in Manchuria.
John Hunter was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical
Institution, Trinity College and the Royal College
of Art where Frank Wiles was a fellow pupil. He was
appointed Inspector of Art for the Northern Ireland
Department of Education in 1923. Hunter was one of
the instigators of CEMA, the forerunner of the Arts
Council. He was awarded the OBE in 1951.
